We all know of the many benefits to youth sports. From fun, friendship, loyalty, and dedication, through to teamwork, fitness and responsibility. All of these qualities are helpful in the maturation of our young people. But education can really define a young person’s future.

The Windsor South Little League board of directors has chosen to “step up to the plate” and bring education to the forefront.

The concept for educational scholarships for athletes is not new but it is generally thought of as large sums of money for attending a particular school or program. Newer to the scholarship scene are opportunities for athletes, both highly skilled and others, to accumulate funds over a long career of amateur play and package those ‘earnings’ to assist with their educational plans.

Why would Windsor South create an Educational Scholarship Fund? Well, firstly to provide assistance for our player’s enhanced education. Also to provide a high profile and worthwhile means of giving back to our youth and community. And lastly to give an added reason for youth and their parents to choose baseball and softball over other activities.

Since 2008 Windsor South Little League has awarded two players from every division, T-Ball through Big League, a $50 educational scholarship.

These scholarships were formed in honour of two very instrumental people in Windsor South’s history. The award for The Most Dedicated Player will be known as the “Mary Jane Hacker Scholarship Award” and the award for The Most Improved Player will be known as the “Bill Fedchun Scholarship Award.”
